Maple Syrup

Bensch Mountain Maple: A Sweet Stop in Newfane, Vermont

Jump to In this guide

There are plenty of practical things to keep in your car for a Vermont road trip. I’d argue that room for maple syrup should be one of them.

If you’re traveling Route 30 through Newfane, Bensch Mountain Maple Local favorite: Bensch Mountain Maple is an easy stop to work into the day. This Southern Vermont sugarhouse has a retail shop where you can pick up maple products, with opportunities to learn more about how syrup is made. It’s a good excuse to break up the drive and bring home something you’ll use long after the trip is over.

More Than a Place to Buy Syrup

Bensch Mountain Maple is a wood-fired sugaring operation with a visitor-friendly sugarhouse and storefront. The Vermont Maple Sugar Makers’ Association lists tastings and sugarhouse tours among its offerings, along with boiling demonstrations when available.

I love being able to connect something in my kitchen to the place it came from. A bottle of syrup becomes more interesting when you’ve seen the equipment and talked with the people behind it. And if you haven’t compared maple grades before, ask about tasting. I tend to reach for the darker, more robust syrup, but trying them side by side is the best way to figure out what you like.

The shop’s listed products include maple cream and candy as well as syrup. Maple cream is particularly persuasive if you have fresh bread waiting at home. Or a spoon. I’m not going to make rules about it.

Visit During Sugaring Season if You Can

You can shop for maple throughout the year, but seeing a sugarhouse operating adds another layer to the visit. The heat and steam make the work involved feel much more real than looking at a finished bottle on a shelf.

My affection for sugaring goes back to living in Middlebury, where my neighbor John tapped the trees on my property. A visit to his sugar shack might involve a beer and an unofficial steam facial while the sap boiled. I still think spending time in a working sugarhouse is one of the better ways to welcome spring in Vermont.

At Bensch, call before coming specifically to watch a boil. Sugaring follows the weather, so an open shop doesn’t necessarily mean the evaporator will be running.

Make It Part of a Newfane Outing

I’d build this stop into a slower drive through the West River Valley, with time to look around Newfane village along the way. You don’t need to turn every outing into a full itinerary. Sometimes a village walk and a stop for maple are enough.

Buying directly from a producer is also an easy way to bring a little Vermont home with you. Just consider picking up an extra bottle if you’re buying gifts. It’s much easier than deciding later which person on your list can go without.
