The Southern Vermont Restaurant Locals Know to Reserve Ahead

Jump to In this guide

There are some Vermont restaurants that don’t need to do much advertising because the locals keep them plenty busy. In tiny Newfane, Vermont, Fat Crow is one of them.

Fat Crow Local favorite: Fat Crow Restaurant has been feeding Newfane since 2008, earning the kind of loyal following that keeps its relatively small dining room bustling. It’s the type of restaurant where regulars already know to make a reservation, the bar seats are some of the best in the house and the menu is significantly bigger than you’d expect when you first walk through the door. And after a 2026 ownership change, there’s a new chapter underway at Fat Crow, but one intentionally focused on keeping the restaurant people already loved rather than turning it into something new.

One of the Biggest Menus I’ve Found in One of the Smallest Restaurants

The first thing that surprised me about Fat Crow was the sheer size of the menu. The wood-fired pizza oven is right in the middle of the action, but this is definitely not just a pizza place. You’ll find burgers and sandwiches, ribs, seafood, soups, salads, appetizers and plenty of comfort food alongside the pizzas. Current offerings include everything from baby back ribs and fish and chips to clam chowder, lobster bisque, fried scallops and a long list of wood-fired pies.

It’s one of those menus where you need a few extra minutes because narrowing it down is half the battle. If you’re coming with a group, even better. Order a few appetizers, get a pizza for the table and then see how ambitious everyone is feeling from there.

The wood-fired pizzas are an obvious place to start, with combinations ranging from a classic Margherita to the mushroom-heavy Fungus Among Us, spicy Goodfella and Crazy Carnivore. But part of the appeal of Fat Crow is that you can bring someone who wants pizza, someone who wants a burger and someone who wants seafood and somehow all three of you have plenty to choose from.

Sit at the Bar If You Can

The room itself has almost as much personality as the menu. Fat Crow has an eclectic, industrial-meets-Vermont-bar feel with motorcycles worked into the decor, a lively little bar and the wood-fired oven sitting right in the middle of everything. It’s not polished in a precious way, and that’s part of what I like about it.

If you can snag a seat at the bar, that’s where I’d sit. You can watch pizzas coming and going from the oven, see the whole restaurant in action and settle in with something local to drink. Fat Crow makes a point of featuring Vermont producers, including local and regional beer, cider and spirits.

The bar service was also a standout during my visit. In a restaurant with this much happening in a relatively compact room, sitting there puts you right in the middle of it.

Fat Crow Has Been Part of Newfane Since 2008

Fat Crow has been serving the community since 2008, which is a significant run for any restaurant, particularly one in a small Vermont town. Over the years, it became the kind of place that functions as much as a gathering spot as a restaurant, drawing locals, seasonal residents and people traveling through Southern Vermont.

That local following is important to understanding the restaurant. Newfane isn’t a big town or a major dining destination packed with dozens of restaurants competing for your attention. Fat Crow has built its reputation largely by getting people to come back, which is probably why walking into the dining room feels much more like finding a longtime neighborhood restaurant than discovering something designed specifically for tourists.

New Owners Took Over Fat Crow in 2026

The story behind Fat Crow’s 2026 ownership change might be my favorite part.

New owners Del and Karoline had been coming to Southern Vermont for more than 20 years, spending ski weekends, summer vacations and holidays here with their family. Fat Crow became one of their regular restaurants, and they eventually became friends with longtime owner Kenny and his wife Denise. When Kenny began considering retirement, Del and Kenny spent about a year planning the transition, with Del and Karoline learning the business along the way. They’re now joined by Rich and Laurie Mamay, bringing additional culinary, hospitality and operational experience to the restaurant.

The Town of Newfane formally reviewed a new liquor license application for Fat Crow under its new ownership in June 2026.

What I find most interesting is what the new owners say they aren’t trying to do: reinvent Fat Crow. Their stated goal is to preserve what has made the restaurant work while carrying it into its next chapter.

For a restaurant with such a strong base of regulars, that feels like the right approach.

Make Fat Crow Part of a Newfane or Southern Vermont Trip

Fat Crow sits directly on Route 30, making it an easy dinner stop if you’re exploring this part of Southern Vermont. Newfane itself is worth spending some time in, and you’re also well positioned for a trip that includes Brattleboro, Jamaica, Townshend or the West River corridor.

This is also a natural restaurant to pair with a stay at Otherland, another Newfane spot I’ve written about. Spend the day exploring Southern Vermont, head to Fat Crow for dinner and then go back to Otherland for a sauna and a night in Newfane. That’s a pairing I’d happily repeat.

During foliage season, I’d make the restaurant reservation before planning too much else around it. Route 30 is a great Southern Vermont drive in fall, and Fat Crow gives you an easy dinner destination at the end of the day rather than trying to figure out where to eat once you’re already hungry.

What to Know Before You Go

The most important thing to know is simple: make a reservation.

Fat Crow currently serves dinner Wednesday through Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m., and the restaurant specifically says reservations are strongly encouraged because its limited seating books quickly. Reservations are made by phone rather than through an online booking platform.

I’d still request the bar if that’s your preference, but I wouldn’t count on wandering in during a busy weekend and finding seats waiting for you. This is one of those small Vermont restaurants where the locals have already figured out the reservation situation.

Why I’d Go Back to Fat Crow

Fat Crow works because it doesn’t feel like it’s trying particularly hard to be one thing. It’s a wood-fired pizza place, neighborhood restaurant, bar, comfort-food spot and local gathering place all at once. The menu is enormous, the room has personality and there’s an energy to the place that makes you want to hang around for another drink rather than immediately asking for the check.

And the ownership story says a lot about what Fat Crow has built in Newfane. The people taking over weren’t outsiders who discovered a restaurant and decided it needed to be transformed. They were regulars who kept coming back, got to know the owners and eventually became part of its next chapter.

A small town, a small dining room, an enormous menu, welcoming service and a loyal following you can’t manufacture.

Just one piece of advice before you go: make the reservation. The locals already have.
