Cocktails, Creative Cuisine & a Fresh Take on Dining in Dorset, Vermont

Jump to In this guide

Dorset may be a small Southern Vermont village, but its dining scene offers more variety than you might expect. And if you’re looking for a restaurant that pairs creative cuisine with excellent cocktails and a beautiful setting, Barrows House Restaurant deserves a spot on your list.

While the nearby Dorset Inn is known for its traditional New England fare and historic tavern atmosphere, Barrows House offers a more contemporary approach to dining. Think inventive appetizers, thoughtfully prepared seafood, seasonal ingredients and cocktails that make arriving early for a drink a very good idea.

Both restaurants are part of The Inns of Dorset, but each offers a distinct dining experience. I appreciate having two very different options within such a small village.

A Modern Restaurant in a Historic Vermont Inn

Barrows House is located just off Route 30, surrounded by six acres of gardens, lawns and historic buildings. The property dates back to 1804, but the restaurant feels considerably more contemporary than its age might suggest.

Inside, you’ll find a beautiful bar accented with locally quarried Dorset marble, historic photographs and comfortable dining spaces that balance the building’s character with modern design.

During warmer months, the spacious outdoor patio is especially appealing. Surrounded by gardens, with fire pits for cooler evenings, it’s a wonderful setting for dinner or cocktails with friends.

I love restaurants that put as much thought into the atmosphere as they do the food, and Barrows House has plenty of both.

Start With a Cocktail and a Few Appetizers

One of the reasons I’d recommend Barrows House is its cocktail program. The bar serves creative, seasonal cocktails alongside an extensive wine list and Vermont craft beers, making it an appealing destination even if you’re simply stopping in for a drink.

I’d suggest arriving a little early, grabbing a seat at the marble bar and enjoying a cocktail before dinner. In the summer, the outdoor patio is another great place to settle in.

And when it comes to ordering food, don’t overlook the appetizers.

The tuna tartare is one of the dishes I’d keep an eye out for. It’s a lighter, fresh option that fits the restaurant’s more contemporary menu, particularly if you’re planning to order several plates to share.

Another dish I’d love to see on the menu is the lobster spaetzle, which brings together the richness of lobster with the comforting texture of the small, tender dumplings. It’s an appealing combination of New England seafood and European-inspired comfort food.

The menu changes seasonally, so these dishes aren’t necessarily available on every visit. The restaurant’s rotating selections are part of the appeal, with new ingredients and preparations appearing throughout the year.

Seasonal Vermont Ingredients With a Creative Twist

Barrows House describes its restaurant as an American gastropub, but the menu goes well beyond conventional pub food.

There’s an emphasis on Vermont farms and regional producers, with dishes that incorporate seasonal vegetables, seafood, meats and inventive accompaniments. You’ll find familiar flavors presented in more interesting ways, alongside a selection of comforting classics.

I appreciate a restaurant where you can make a meal out of appetizers and cocktails just as easily as you can settle in for a full dinner.

It’s also a good choice for a group, particularly when everyone wants something a little different.

Barrows House vs. The Dorset Inn: Two Different Dining Experiences

If you’re deciding where to eat in Dorset, I’d recommend considering the atmosphere and menu you’re in the mood for.

The Dorset Inn is my choice when I’m craving a traditional Vermont tavern experience. With its historic dining rooms, wood-burning fireplace and classic New England dishes, it celebrates the village’s long history of hospitality.

Barrows House, on the other hand, feels fresher and more contemporary. The cocktails are a bigger part of the experience, the menu takes more creative liberties and the outdoor patio is particularly inviting during the warmer months.

Neither replaces the other. In fact, I’d argue they’re complementary, giving visitors two excellent reasons to dine in Dorset.

And since both properties are part of The Inns of Dorset, you can even experience both during a longer stay in the area.

Make Dinner Part of a Southern Vermont Getaway

Dorset is one of my favorite Southern Vermont villages to visit, particularly when I have time to wander without much of an agenda.

Before dinner, take a stroll around the historic village green, browse the local shops or enjoy the surrounding countryside. Nearby Manchester offers additional shopping, galleries and attractions, making it easy to build a full day around the area.

If you’re staying overnight at Barrows House, the property also offers guest accommodations, gardens, a heated outdoor pool and other amenities that make it appealing for a longer getaway.

But you certainly don’t need to be an overnight guest to enjoy the restaurant.

A Different Side of Dining in Dorset

What I appreciate about Barrows House is that it offers a contemporary dining experience without losing its connection to Dorset’s history and surroundings.

The creative menu, inviting cocktail bar and beautiful outdoor spaces make it an appealing option for date night, dinner with friends or an evening out during a Southern Vermont getaway.

And if you’ve already experienced the more traditional fare at The Dorset Inn, Barrows House offers another perspective on what dining in this charming village can be.
