A Vintage Shop With Plenty of Personality
Located at 377 Pine Street in Burlington’s South End Arts District, Barge Canal Market is a sprawling, 3,000-plus-square-foot shop filled with vintage furniture, antiques, mid-century modern pieces and locally made goods.
The store is owned by Adelle Lawrence and Jeremy Smith, who have created a space that feels more like a collection of thoughtfully decorated rooms than a traditional antique shop.
You’ll find furniture arranged with artwork, rugs, lighting and decorative accessories, making it easy to imagine how different pieces might look in your own home.
I love that the inventory spans so many styles. You might find a mid-century modern dresser next to an old farmhouse table, a vintage lamp or a piece of artwork that immediately catches your attention.
And because much of the inventory is vintage or one-of-a-kind, there’s always something different to see.

The Rugs Are My Favorite Part
If there’s one thing I always make time to browse at Barge Canal, it’s the rugs. I love vintage rugs, particularly ones with beautiful patterns, rich colors and a little wear that gives them character.
They can completely change a room without requiring you to replace all the furniture. And I’d much rather find a rug with some history than buy something mass-produced that looks identical to what everyone else has.
Barge Canal regularly carries an assortment of vintage and antique rugs in different sizes, colors and styles.
It’s the section I’d spend the most time exploring, particularly if I were decorating a new home or looking for something to anchor a living room.
Inventory changes frequently, so if you find a rug you love, I wouldn’t count on it being there the next time you visit.
Home Decor & Kitchen Finds Throughout the Year
Barge Canal is also a great place to shop for smaller home accessories.
I’m always drawn to the kitchen items. Vintage glassware, serving dishes, pottery, old utensils and pieces that are both decorative and practical.
There’s something satisfying about finding a beautiful old serving bowl or a set of glasses that has already been around for decades and still has plenty of life left.
The shop also carries artwork, mirrors, lighting, furniture and an assortment of decorative objects.
I could easily spend an hour here browsing without looking for anything specific.
And I think that’s the best way to shop at Barge Canal. Go in with an open mind and see what catches your attention.

Christmas at Barge Canal Market
If you only visit Barge Canal once a year, I’d make it during the Christmas season.
The shop has become known for its seasonal displays, with vintage ornaments, holiday decorations and beautifully arranged Christmas vignettes throughout the store.
I love vintage Christmas decor. The old glass ornaments, nostalgic decorations and pieces that remind me of things my grandparents had when I was growing up.
Barge Canal’s holiday displays bring together those older pieces with rustic furniture and seasonal greenery, creating a wonderfully festive atmosphere.
It’s a fun place to shop for Christmas decorations that you won’t necessarily find at a big-box store. And I’d also consider it for holiday gifts, particularly for someone who loves antiques, decorating or collecting vintage pieces.

Make a Day of Exploring Burlington’s South End
One of the reasons I visit Barge Canal so often is its location.
Burlington’s South End is full of independent businesses, art studios, restaurants and breweries, making it easy to spend an afternoon exploring Pine Street.
Speaking Volumes, a secondhand bookstore and record shop, is nearby and another stop I’d recommend.
During the warmer months, the Burlington Vintage Market also operates in the Barge Canal parking lot on select Saturdays, bringing together vintage dealers from around the region.
And if you’re hungry or thirsty afterward, you’re close to several of Burlington’s best breweries, including Zero Gravity and Queen City Brewery.
I love that you can spend a few hours shopping for antiques and then finish the afternoon with a Vermont craft beer.
