Sometimes the most memorable views in Vermont aren’t found at the summit of a mountain or the end of a challenging hike. Sometimes they’re waiting at a simple wooden bench overlooking the countryside.
Heaven’s Bench in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is one of those places.
Perched on Darling Hill near East Burke, this scenic overlook offers sweeping views of rolling farmland, distant mountains and the beautiful landscape that makes the Northeast Kingdom one of my favorite regions to explore. A single wooden bench sits in an open meadow, inviting visitors to stop, sit and appreciate the scenery.
It’s a relatively simple destination, but the setting is extraordinary. And despite its connection to one of Vermont’s most famous mountain biking destinations, Kingdom Trails, you don’t necessarily need a bike to appreciate it.
If you’re exploring the Northeast Kingdom, Heaven’s Bench deserves a spot on your itinerary.

Where Is Heaven’s Bench in Vermont?
Heaven’s Bench is located on Darling Hill, a scenic ridgeline near East Burke and Lyndonville in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.
The overlook sits within the Kingdom Trails Local favorite: Kingdom Trails network, an extensive system of recreational trails that winds through privately owned farmland, forests and open countryside.
The bench itself overlooks a broad landscape of fields, wooded hillsides and distant mountains. Unlike many Vermont viewpoints surrounded by trees, Heaven’s Bench offers expansive, unobstructed scenery, with views stretching in multiple directions.
It’s particularly beautiful during fall foliage season, when the surrounding hillsides turn shades of gold, orange and red. But the landscape is equally appealing during the lush green months of summer.
Part of the experience is the simplicity of the setting. There’s no observation tower, elaborate viewing platform or interpretive center. Just a bench, an open meadow and a beautiful Vermont landscape.

Why Is It Called Heaven’s Bench?
The name feels particularly appropriate once you’ve seen the view.
Heaven’s Bench sits in an elevated pasture on Darling Hill, surrounded by the rolling landscape of the Northeast Kingdom. The open setting and expansive views have made it a beloved stopping point for people exploring the area.
It’s easy to understand why visitors associate the location with a little piece of heaven.
Beyond its beautiful name, the bench has become a recognizable landmark within the Kingdom Trails community. Mountain bikers frequently stop here to rest, enjoy the scenery and photograph the view before continuing along the trail network.
Over time, it’s also become a destination for photographers, hikers and travelers interested in seeing a different side of Vermont.
What I appreciate most about Heaven’s Bench is that the attraction isn’t really the bench itself. It’s the invitation to stop moving for a few minutes and appreciate what’s in front of you.
In a region known for outdoor adventure, that’s a worthwhile reminder.
Heaven’s Bench and the History of Kingdom Trails
To understand why Heaven’s Bench has become such a recognizable destination, it helps to know a little about Kingdom Trails.
Founded in 1994, the Kingdom Trail Association is a nonprofit organization that manages an extensive network of recreational trails centered around East Burke.
Today, the network includes more than 100 miles of trails for mountain biking and other nonmotorized activities, drawing outdoor enthusiasts from across New England and beyond.
Kingdom Trails has become internationally recognized for its mountain biking, with trails that range from beginner-friendly routes through open meadows to more challenging singletrack through forests and hillsides.
But what makes the network particularly interesting is its relationship with the surrounding community.
Many of the trails cross privately owned land, made accessible through agreements with local landowners. That cooperation has allowed Kingdom Trails to develop an extraordinary recreational network while preserving the agricultural landscape and rural character of the region.
Heaven’s Bench is a beautiful example of that relationship. Rather than being tucked away deep in a forest, the overlook sits among the open fields and farmland that define Darling Hill. Visitors can enjoy the scenery because of the cooperation between the trail association, local landowners and the broader community.
It’s a reminder that some of Vermont’s most memorable outdoor experiences depend on people working together to protect access to the land.

How to Walk to Heaven’s Bench
One of the appealing things about Heaven’s Bench is that you don’t have to be an experienced mountain biker to enjoy the scenery.
The overlook is accessible through the Kingdom Trails network, and visitors can reach it on foot using designated pedestrian routes when those trails are open.
A common starting area is Darling Hill, near the Wildflower Inn Local favorite: Wildflower Innand the Kingdom Trails trail facilities. From there, the surrounding trail network connects to the Heaven’s Bench area.
The Bill Magill Trail and Heaven’s Bench Trail are useful landmarks when looking at the trail map, although the exact route available to walkers depends on current trail designations and access rules.
The approach takes you through a beautiful landscape of open fields and gently rolling terrain, with the scenery becoming more expansive as you reach the ridgeline.
While the bench itself is an easy place to enjoy the view, don’t confuse that with guaranteed roadside access. The walking distance and terrain depend on your designated starting point and the approved pedestrian route.
Before visiting, I’d recommend stopping at the Kingdom Trails Welcome Center in East Burke or consulting the official trail map to confirm the best walking route, trail conditions and access requirements.

What to Know Before Visiting
Kingdom Trails is a managed recreational network, and access rules matter.
A Kingdom Trail Association membership is required for trail use, and visitors should park only in designated parking areas. Not every mountain biking trail is open to pedestrians, so it’s important to follow the current trail map rather than assuming every path is available for walking.
Dogs are also restricted on much of the network, including the Darling Hill trails, so this isn’t a destination I’d recommend planning as a dog walk without confirming an applicable exception.
I’d suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes, bringing water and allowing additional time to enjoy the views. And if you’re visiting during fall foliage season, consider arriving earlier in the day when parking areas and trails may be less busy.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Heaven’s Bench?
Heaven’s Bench offers beautiful scenery throughout the warmer months, although I think fall is an especially memorable time to visit.
Fall Foliage at Heaven’s Bench
During autumn, the open landscape provides an incredible vantage point for appreciating the Northeast Kingdom’s foliage.
From the bench, you can look across fields toward hillsides filled with changing leaves. The combination of farmland, distant mountains and vibrant colors captures so much of what makes fall in Vermont special.
The Northeast Kingdom often experiences some of Vermont’s earliest foliage changes, making it a popular destination for late September and early October adventures.
Exact peak timing varies from year to year, so it’s worth watching local foliage conditions rather than planning around a particular date.
Summer on Darling Hill
Summer brings lush green fields, long days and beautiful mountain views.
This is also one of the busiest seasons for Kingdom Trails, with mountain bikers traveling to East Burke to enjoy the network.
If you’re hoping for a quieter visit, consider a weekday or a time outside peak riding hours.
Sunset at Heaven’s Bench
Heaven’s Bench is particularly well known for its sunset views.
The open ridgeline provides an expansive setting for watching the evening light change across the surrounding countryside, and the bench has become a favorite photography location.
If you’re hoping to visit near sunset, plan your route carefully and make sure you can return to your designated parking area safely and within any applicable trail-access restrictions.
Why Heaven’s Bench Is More Than Just a Scenic Overlook
There are plenty of beautiful places to sit and admire the landscape in Vermont, but Heaven’s Bench represents something particularly meaningful about the Northeast Kingdom.
The view is a combination of natural scenery and working farmland. The trails exist because local landowners have welcomed recreation onto their properties. And the bench has become a shared destination for people who appreciate the outdoors, whether they’re traveling on two wheels or two feet.
I love that a simple wooden bench has become such a recognizable landmark.
It doesn’t need elaborate signage or an attraction built around it. The landscape provides everything.
And in a state where we’re fortunate to have so much natural beauty around us, places like Heaven’s Bench remind me that enjoying it doesn’t always require a strenuous hike or a full day of adventure.
Sometimes a short outing, a beautiful view and a few minutes to appreciate your surroundings are enough.
Make Heaven’s Bench Part of a Northeast Kingdom Getaway
If you’re planning a visit to Heaven’s Bench, I’d recommend spending additional time exploring East Burke and the surrounding Northeast Kingdom.
East Burke has developed a vibrant outdoor recreation community thanks in large part to Kingdom Trails and nearby Burke Mountain. You’ll find bike shops, casual restaurants, lodging and plenty of opportunities to spend time outside.
The scenic roads around Darling Hill are also beautiful, particularly during foliage season, with rolling farmland and mountain views throughout the area.
For a longer outing, consider visiting Lake Willoughby, one of Vermont’s most dramatic glacial lakes, or spending time exploring the shops and restaurants in nearby Lyndonville.
The Northeast Kingdom rewards travelers who leave extra time in their itineraries. The scenery changes around nearly every bend, and there are countless opportunities to appreciate the rural landscape.
