Where to Choose-and-Cut Your Own Vermont Christmas Tree

There’s something utterly special about the experience of cutting your own Christmas tree… ’Tis the season to support a Vermont tree farm! Bundle up and head to your local Christmas tree farm for a choose-and-cut adventure. Many tree farms have sleigh rides, hot cocoa, and wreaths and garland for shopping. Be sure to pick the very best Christmas tree (your whole group has to agree!) and take festive family photos. Then enjoy the sweet scent of balsam in your home through the holiday season!

Wait, you might be wondering if cutting your own Christmas tree is really good for the environment. Or is it better to invest in an artificial tree to leave the trees out in nature standing? Many Christmas tree farms in Vermont pride themselves on the care of their trees year-round. They take extra care in planting their seedlings, ensuring they are properly fertilized, and then well-trimmed for big, happy trees! Many of Vermont’s Christmas tree farms are sustainably managed. Once one is cut, another seedling is planted. Artificial trees are made from plastic and oil-based products such as plastic. Real trees keep natural spaces open and undeveloped.

Where is your go-to for cutting your own Christmas tree in Vermont?

Here are some of my favorite Vermont Christmas tree farms:

Purinton Family Tree Farm, Huntington, Vermont

Purinton is one of Vermont’s most idyllic cut-your-own tree farms set on a long hill with sweeping views all around. They’re also one of the best places for big trees! Purinton’s has over 14,000 balsam fir Christmas trees on 14 acres of land. They also operate a 17,000 tap maple sugarbush behind the tree farm!

White’s Tree Farm, Essex Junction, Vermont

White’s is a favorite among local families. Grab some cocoa and purchase wreaths and other holiday decor. They tend to have smaller trees, but they do have a secret location in Jericho that has been known for having larger ones to cut!

Moffatt’s Tree Farm, Craftsbury, Vermont

Moffatt’s is one of the most beautiful tree farms in the state in the Northeast Kingdom for wholesale and cut-your-own Christmas trees. Their farm is sustainably managed and it shows in big, happy, beautiful trees!

The Russell Farm, Starksboro, Vermont

Russell Tree Farm offers festive horse-drawn carriage rides – book it through their website. For $90, you can cut a tree and go on a sleigh ride! (For 2023, it sounds like they are doing pre-cut trees only but still with sleigh rides available!)

Werner Tree Farm, Middlebury, Vermont

For over 40 years, Werner Tree Farm has been growing balsam fir, canaan fir, balsam/fraser fir crosses, balsam/veitch fir crosses, white pine, blue spruce, and white spruce, for cut-your-own and pre-cut Christmas trees.

Pineberry Farm, Wheelock, Vermont

Head to the Northeast Kingdom for a very Vermonty experience when you cut your own. They also ship all over the country! Pineberry is open from 10am to sundown every day.

Larry’s Tree Farm, Bakersfield, Vermont

Larry’s has been a Christmas tree farm in Vermont for over 35 years. In addition to a beautiful setting and trees, Larry’s also have a Christmas shop for decor and ornaments. Don’t miss their hot cocoa rustic shed!

Bakersfield Tree Farm, Bakersfield, Vermont

Choose from over 20,000 trees in a stunning country setting. They offer Fraser, Balsam and Canaan Firs, along with white pine trees, ranging in size from tabletop to over nine feet tall. Bring your well-behaved pup on a leash!

Mt Anthony Tree Farms, Bennington and Pownal, Vermont

Mt Anthony is the largest grower of Christmas trees in Southern Vermont with Balsam and Fraser fir available. Head to North Pownal for your cut-your-own experience! $70 gets you any size tree available.

Vermont National Forest Permits

Looking for a tree that’s a bit more natural? Get a permit to cut a tree in the Vermont National Forest for only $5! Now that is a Vermonty experience!
