How’s the weather in Vermont? Working with people from all over the country, whenever we pop on a call, the first question is about the weather in Vermont. Maybe it’s the arctic chills we can get in the depths of February – or the warm ups that have Vermonters looking for swimming holes to find some respite from the few days of heat we get close to triple digits. Or perhaps it’s the six months of “winter”, with mud season and stick season thrown in.

When visiting Vermont, you may hear, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes…” This sentiment is true for the majority of New England. Vermont weather can be unpredictable, especially in the winter with snowstorms followed by bluebird sunny days. How’s the Weather in Vermont in January?

Without fail, every January in Vermont has a thaw. I have vivid memories of a weekend in January where the temperatures were in the 70s and I was outside in a t-shirt. January can also bring snow most days and fluctuations of temperatures. We typically see highs in the low 30s or upper 20s and lows in the single digits.

Vermont Weather in February

February is often where we see a true cold snap – whether temperatures will be under 0 degrees F and we’ll have wind chills in the -30s and 40s. This is the time to ensure you mitigate frozen pipes, keep your furnace temperature steady and increase circulation of warm air throughout your home. Typically high are in the upper 20s during the day with most nights in the single digits or below. Layer up – it’s time to bring on the base layers!

Average Temperatures in March

March is typically the end of snow in Vermont; or at least we’ll know the snow will melt quickly if we do get a big storm. Usually we’re good for a big snow storm in the beginning of the month. Then we start to see the days getting warmer – in the upper 30s and mid 40s while the nights stay cooler, ensuring maple sap starts to flow. March is the start of mud season. Ensure you have good rubber boots for any outside explorations.

Ah, April in Vermont. April showers do bring flowers, but the majority of the month is soggy with mud season in Vermont. Watch the back dirt roads that will have frost leaving the ground and often deep ruts. Average daily temperatures will range from high 40s to low 60s at the end of the month, paving the way for Vermont’s warmer weather to begin in May.

May is the beginning of warmth, sun and lushness in Vermont! Daily temperatures are often in the mid-60s to 70s, while the nights may tips into the 50s. Definitely bring a light summer jacket with you. Vermont comes back to life in May with so much spring color.

June is the beginning of summer in Vermont, with average temperatures in the mid-60s to mid-70s. June tends to be a wetter month, which is helpful for ensuring Lake Champlain levels stay high. Nights in June are perfect shorts and sweatshirt weather!

How’s the Weather in Vermont in July?

July brings about true summer weather, with average temps in the 80s. Most Vermonters are bringing out their AC units as the nights in July tend to stay warmer. Fun fact: Most Vermont homes don’t have central AC! July 20th is historically the hottest day of the year in Vermont.

Vermont Weather in August

August brings about warm weather and copious sun in Vermont. Wear ample sunscreen as the sunny days in August tend to be fierce! It’s the warmest month of the year. We may reach a few days in the upper 90s.

How’s the Weather in Vermont in September?

We may be past Labor Day for the bulk of September, but it’s one of the best months to be outside, even in Lake Champlain! The lake remains warm and there’s just a smidge of Vermont fall in the air. We see temperatures in the mid-60s to mid-50s, with nights bringing on a bit more of a chill, the perfect weather for bonfires.

Vermont Weather in October

October brings to Vermont the height of fall foliage in Vermont with peak usually the first week of the month. Weather variances throughout the year can either delay or it speed up the state’s epic color. We might see some flurries in October around Halloween, but usually snow will hold off more toward Thanksgiving. Average temperatures are typically mid-50s down to mid-30s for the majority of the month.

What’s the Weather in Vermont in November?

November in Vermont is true stick season. The weather in Vermont in November is variable. We can get have a white Thanksgiving later in the month. Ensuring you put your snow tires on by Thanksgiving is a good rule of thumb. Typically we’re in the low 40s or upper 30s for the majority of the month. Pack a sweater or fleece for the evenings and early morning but be prepared to shed some layers during the day.

Average Temperatures in December

The holiday spirit has arrived in Vermont! Typically we will have a white Christmas although there often isn’t much snowfall throughout the whole month. We see highest under freezing, usually around 30 degrees F and lows in the teens. Always be careful when driving in the first couple of snowstorms in Vermont, while drivers get on their snow tires and remember how to drive in the slip and slide!
