The Most Photogenic Vermont Red Barns to Photograph

With the closing of access to the popular Jennie Farm in Reading, Vermont and Sleepy Hollow in Pomfret for foliage season in 2023, many non-local influencers have said to cancel trips. I will shoot from the Vermont mountain tops that there are oh so many beautiful barns and country scenes throughout Vermont worthy of a visit. And really in every season, these beautiful red barns are a stunning subject for photographers. After all, there is nothing more stunning than a bright red Vermont barn juxtaposed against a white blanket of freshly fallen snow.

Why are barns red in Vermont?

Driving through Vermont you will see countless barns… many dating back to the 1700s. But why are so many red?  It was actually a move in frugality and necessity, not for aesthetics! Dating back to Colonial times, many people used linseed oil as a sealant on wood to prevent rotting and damage from the elements. And that oil often turned wood a red color. In the 1800s when paint became available, red was the cheapest color… and now we have stunning red barns throughout the state!

Here are iconic red barns throughout Vermont to put on your list to see this fall (or in any season!)…

Conant’s Riverside Farm, West Main Street, Richmond, Vermont

This is a sixth generation dairy farm that also sells corn and has an amazing pumpkin display.

Jaffin Barn, Jaffin Flats Road, Greensboro, Vermont

This is my favorite in the state, dates back to 1898 and is uniquely shaped. It’s also right by Hill Farmstead.

Barn, Kenyon Road, Richmond, Vermont

This red barn has stunning long mountain and foliage views behind it on a back dirt road, not too far off of Interstate 89.

The Red Barn on Church Street, Peacham, Vermont

This farm is heavily photographed with the backdrop of the white Congregational church and spire next to it to the quaint town of Peacham.
