Vermont Sugar Houses to Visit for Maple Open House Weekend

The snow is melting in Vermont. The days are warmer, but the nights are still cold. This means maple sap is flowing, and Vermont maple syrup season is upon us! Maple Open Weekend is right around the corner in Vermont. Over 75 syrup producers open their doors for two special weekends: March 25-26 and April 1-2, 2023.

From sampling maple hot dogs and maple pickles to enjoying pancake breakfasts and “sugar on snow” to carriage rides and sugarĀ  house tours, Maple Open House Weekend provides many opportunities to get out and about in Vermont. These open houses give locals and tourists alike in-depth knowledge of one of Vermont’s leading industries.

Celebrate the 2023 crop and sugar makers in Vermont by visiting some of these maple operations throughout the state. Also, find tips for visiting maple open house weekend and fun facts about Vermont’s maple syrup operation.

Tips for Visiting Vermont for Maple Syrup Season & Maple Open House Weekend

  • Be sure you dress accordingly! It’s often soggy and rainy in late March and early April.
  • Don’t forget your mud boots. (I love my LLBean Boots that slip on and off.)
  • Take note of dirt road routes while you’re exploring Vermont. Many get rutted! And mud is more slippery than snow/ice in a a lot of instances.
  • If you are going on dirt roads, ensure 4WD/AWD and/or good tires.
  • Bring cash. Many of the sugar houses have limited WiFI and don’t take credit cards.
  • Bring an appetite for sweets! Whether you’re sampling syrups off the tank or a sweet treat, you’ll want to come hungry on your maple adventures.

  1. Nice article and it is wonderful to see writers paying attention to the agribusiness side of Vermont life. Is this a comprehensive list of sugaring houses observing maple sugar days in Vermont? Not one to jump to conclusions, but am unconvinced that other sugar houses – such as those in Orange, Franklin, Caledonia, et al. – are shunning the open house weekend (March 25-26) wholesale.

    • Hi Chandler – thanks for the question! This is definitely NOT a comprehensive list – just some of my favorite sugar houses to visit (and a few I’ll be visiting these upcoming weekends). There are over 75 in Vermont participating in Open House Maple Weekend and many, many maple producers throughout the state. I would recommend contacting your favorite sugar houses directly to see if they are participating or putting on any special events. Happy maple season! ~Erin
