10 Vermont-Made Stocking Stuffer Ideas

This year, Randy and I decided to do stocking stuffers for each other rather than a larger gift, given we’re finally giving in a buying our very own snowblower (how have we lasted this long in Vermont without one?). I’ve put together some of my favorite made-in-Vermont stocking stuffers, from hot sauce to chocolates to Darn Tough socks to bite-sized treats. What are your go-to Vermont stocking stuffers? 10 Vermont Stocking Stuffer Ideas

Benito’s Hot Sauce (Montpelier, Vermont)
Benito's Hot SauceEvery year, Benito’s makes an appearance in our family stockings. It’s become a tradition to try different varieties on our “Christmas breakfast,” an egg-sausage strata that is the perfect vehicle for a little heat. All hot sauces from Benito’s are 100% natural, sodium free and non-GMO and also bottled by hand in Montpelier, Vermont. Potto Rojo ($9.99) is not for the unexperienced with hot sauce, but man is it flavorful; it’s Benito’s hottest hot sauce to date, made with Carolina Reaper chile peppers, blood orange juice, carrots and sweet peppers. Habanero-Infused Maple Syrup ($8.25) is seriously good on eggs and even ice cream, and Old Coy Dog ($6.99) is another staple in our kitchen, made with organic jolokia peppers. Benito’s offers deals on multiple hot sauce purchases, so you can try out a few to find your favorite(s).

Darn Tough Socks (Northfield, Vermont)
Darn Tough Socks - Northfield, Vermont
Socks are not the most glamorous gift for a stocking stuffer, but I am always excited when I open a new pair of Darn Toughs on Christmas morning. Darn Tough really knows their socks—enough that they are guaranteed, unconditionally, for life. We’ve sent back ten-year old socks with a hole and within a week received a brand new pair. Now that’s a product (and company) I can get behind. The socks are made out of shrink-treated Merino wool and have high-density knit stitches for durability and cushion; they also don’t slip or bunch, making them awesome for outdoor adventures. I firmly believe they’re the only socks you’ll ever need in your life. The best part? They’re all made in Vermont. Darn Tough’s motto is, “Nobody ever outsourced anything for quality,” so they’re dedicated to making their own. Shop online or find a local retailer near you.

Vermont Bee Balm (Craftsbury, Vermont)
Vermont Bee BalmVermont Bee Balm, offering healing balms and butters made with pure Vermont beeswax, is the perfect Vermont stocking stuffer knowing with harsh winters we all face chapped lips and dry hands. For those with allergies, they don’t use any gluten, peanut oil or tree nut, so you can feel good about lathering a balm on your lips or hands. The Original Bee Balm ($6.50) is made with only olive oil and Vermont beeswax, but it’ll help heal and prevent cracking; the best part? It’s not greasy. Bohemian Body Butter ($12.50) is a full-body use moisturizer with a lemongrass scent. Both have a light and sweet natural scent.

Danforth Pewter (Middlebury, Vermont)
Danforth Pewter EarringsDanforth Pewter, offering handmade pewter for the home, jewelry and holidays, is one-stop-stocking-stuffing for everyone in your life. Buy grandma a Dragonfly Tea Infuser, mom the Mountain Ash Wire Earrings ($24.95), dad the Tractor Pewter Keyring ($16.95), a Trout Wallet Clip ($25) for the fisherman in your life or the Leaves Bookmark ($16) for the reader in the family. You also can’t go wrong with Danforth’s pewter ornaments. I particularly like the 2013 Danforth Keeper Ornament ($17), the Nutcracker Ornament ($17) or the Bluebird Ornament ($17).

Ledge Haven Farm (Orwell, Vermont)
Ledge Haven Farm - MapleEvery year before we started tapping our own trees for a neighbor who has an impressive sugaring operation, I asked for maple syrup for Christmas given we consume a lot of it in a year and the good stuff can be pricey! Ledge Haven Farm in Orwell, Vermont, is a family-run maple production located on the shores of Lake Champlain. They’ve been making their own maple syrup for over 40 years and, man, is it good! Their Glass Maple Leaf ($10) or Maple Cream ($8) would make a tasty surprise in a stocking Christmas morning. You can shop online or visit Ledge Haven Farm’s sugarhouse year round. (They also do decorative nips as wedding favors if you’re interested, in addition to larger maple syrup sizes… And their prices are really fair!)

Green Mountain Mustard (Richmond, Vermont)
Ragin' Rooster - Green Mountain MustardGreen Mountain Mustard isn’t your typical yellow mustard or Grey Poupon. It’s fabulously delicious in a variety of innovative flavors. We purchased our first container this summer and ate it on everything… within about three days, it’s that good. The Ragin’ Rooster (Sriracha Mustard) is my definite favorite, made with homemade sriracha sauce. Other unique mustard flavors include, Deli Dirt (Everything Bagel Mustard), Clove Encounter (Garlic & Oregano Mustard) and for the mustard purist, Golden Grain (Maple Wholegrain Mustard), with just a touch of heat. Individual mustards sell for $6.99 on their website.

Vermont Hardwood Pens (Bristol, Vermont)
Vermont Hardwood PensI first learned of Vermont Hardwood Pens at the Middlebury Farmers’ Market this summer. All of the pens are made with reclaimed Vermont hardwood, acquired from firewood, scrap wood, weather damaged trees and waste wood from a local mill. There is a variety of wood used from ash and cherry to red elm and white oak. There’s even a deer antler pen! The owner, Jim Cunningham, can make custom ordered pens from a beloved tree in your yard or a memorable piece of furniture. Give the gift of a wooden pen to a family member who still loves to send hand-written letters or prefers the action of hand-writing, whether a grocery list or a love note, over technology. Most pens are $22 and can be purchased online or at a variety of shops and galleries around Vermont.

Caledonia Spirits (Hardwick, Vermont)Barr Hill Reserve Tom Cat
Caledonia Spirits is getting quite a positive reputation in Vermont for their Barr Hill Gin, Barr Hill Vodka and Barr Hill Reserve Tom Cat. All three include Vermont raw honey, giving a subtle sweetness and distinction to the spirits. For the stocking, consider a nip of vodka, gin or whiskey for a spirits connoisseur who can appreciate the unique features of these finely crafted liquors.
