Explore Vermont’s Lamoille Valley Rail Trail

If you’re looking for ideas to get outside in Vermont in any season, hit the open, car-free road of the recently completed Lamoille Valley Rail Trail (LVRT)…  The 93 miles of the rail trail run from Swanton to St. Johnsbury, Vermont. While on the trail, take in the sights of long mountain views, rolling hills, lush farm fields, and river plains along the flat route. The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail is New England’s longest rail trail. And it connects 18 towns across Vermont. Along the route, you’ll stop in many quaint towns, such as Cambridge, Morrisville, Hardwick, and Danville. You will find coffee shops, breweries, bookstores and restaurants along the way. The Rail Trail is the perfect way to get outside… Explore Vermont by foot, bike, skis, or whatever type of non-motorized transportation fits you best in the given season!

Exploring the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail: Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Lamoille Valley Raily Trail (LVRT) is open in all seasons.
  • Hiking, bike, cross-country ski, snowshoe, dog sled, snowmobile, horseback ride, etc. – any non-car/motorcycle transportation you choose!
  • The path itself on the rail trail is 10-feet wide and crushed, compacted gravel. It’s also very flat with minimal incline (under 3 percent). This makes it an easy way to get in miles by foot or bike. The trail is also ADA-compliant and accessible for wheelchair users.
  • There are many roadside parking areas along the LVRT. Here, you can pick up the route if you want to do a smaller segment of the full 93 miles. Find a map of all of the public parking areas at designated trailheads here on the rail trail’s site.
  • Visiting without a bicycle? Visit the Lamoille Valley Bike Tours, just off the trail, in Johnson rents ebikes, regular, and cargo-style bikes. They also offer bike tours for those wanting a bit more structure, along with a bike shuttle to pick you up or drop your off.
  • The LVRT is an important connector between the VAST snowmobile trail network, Long Trail, Catamount Trail, Velomont, Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail, Hardwick Trails, Three Rivers Bike Path, and Cambridge Greenway.
