Farmers' Markets

The Best Vermont Farmers’ Markets to Visit

I’m a huge fan of Vermont farmers’ markets in all seasons. Visiting markets is one of the easiest ways to support local farmers, growers, artisans and makers – now especially after the 2023 flooding in Vermont. Did you know Vermont leads the United States in farmers markets, as well as organic producers and CSAs per capita? Vermont farmers’ markets are an experience to collect in and of themselves. Many markets feature live music, prepared foods for a picnic, and diverse locally made and grown products from breads and jams to fresh produce and flowers to artisan-crafted goods that make great gifts. So grab your reusable tote and a friend and support a local farmer at a market around the state.

Here are some of my recommendations for the best farmers’ market in Vermont to visit as a hub of agriculture, community and connection in Vermont.

What is your go-to farmers’ market in Vermont?

Vermont Farmers’ Markets around the State:

Brattleboro, Vermont Farmers’ Market:

The Brattleboro Area Farmers’ Market runs Saturdays May through October from 9am-2pm, and has diverse offerings from upcycled goods to gourmet mushrooms to pies, produce and wood-fired baked goods. You can even get a massage! Find it at 570 Western Ave (Route 9) in Brattleboro.

Dorset, Vermont Farmers’ Market:

The Dorset Farmers’ Market is a producers-only market year-round on Sundays with diverse produce, meats, breads and baked goods. In the summer months, it’s held at H.N  Williams store at 2732 VT 30 in Dorset, while the winter market is held at JK Adams at 1430 VT-30 in Dorset.

Waitsfield, Vermont Farmers’ Market:

The Waitsfield Farmers’ Market is one of my personal favorites with such a good vibe, great vendors and always live music. Located on the Mad River Green, the market features a distillery, botanicals, pasture-based meats, pickles and so much more deliciousness to enjoy on site or bring home. The dog watching is some of the best! It runs every Saturday rain or shine from mid-May through mid-October.

Burlington, Vermont Farmers’ Market:

The Burlington Farmers’ Market is one of the largest markets in the state with over 70 vendors. Held every Saturday from May through October, the market has a focus on local, organic, and sustainable products, from fresh fruits and vegetables to artisan cheeses, baked goods, and handcrafted gifts. Make a morning of it and enjoy prepared foods and stock up for the week with local provisions. Don’t miss Youth Vendor Day in September!

Winooski, Vermont Farmers’ Market:

The Winooski Farmers’ Market operates from May to October, every Sunday from 10 AM to 2 PM on Winooski Falls Way. Listen to live music while stocking up on veggies, bread, and local cheeses.

Stowe, Vermont Farmers’ Market:

Operating from May to October, the Stowe Farmers’ Market is held every Sunday at 2043 Mountain Road in Stowe between Stowe Motel and Edelweiss Mountain Deli. Prepared food vendors range from barbecue to crepes to samosas and pizza. While Vermont crafters showcase their jewelry, pottery, photography, paintings, glasswork and more.

Norwich, Vermont Farmers’ Market:

The Norwich Farmers’ Market is an intimate but well-loved market. It’s also one of the oldest in the state, dating back to 1977. Stock up on dried garlic slices, giant local produce, beeswax candles, biscotti, breads, jams and more. In the summer, find the market on Route 5 South, about a half mile from Exit 13 off 1-91. In the winter, find them indoors at Tracy Hall in the village of Norwich.

Rutland, Vermont Farmers’ Market:

The Rutland Farmers’ Market is another huge market with over 100 diverse vendors that operates all year round. Their motto is: if you don’t grow it, cook it or make it, don’t bring it. In the summer, visit Depot Park in downtown Rutland and starting in November, at the Franklin Conference Center. Spend a morning pursuing and sampling!
