# An Extraordinary Art Gallery Inside St. Johnsbury’s Athenaeum

The library at the [St. Johnsbury](https://travelikealocalvt.com/category/destinations/st-johnsbury/) [Athenaeum](https://travelikealocalvt.com/places/st-johnsbury-athenaeum/) is enough to make me stop and stare. The woodwork, the balconies, the books: it feels straight out of *Beauty and the Beast*. But give yourself time to keep exploring, because there’s an art gallery here that deserves a visit of its own.

Inside this historic building on Main Street, you’ll find paintings in elaborate gold frames and marble sculptures sharing space with a landscape so large it practically becomes another wall. It’s a remarkable find in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, particularly if you walked in expecting to browse a library.

## The Painting You Can’t Miss

Albert Bierstadt’s *The Domes of the Yosemite* is the centerpiece of the gallery, and one of the most famous paintings you can see in Vermont. At roughly ten feet tall and fifteen feet wide, it commands your attention as soon as you enter the room. It’s also Bierstadt’s largest surviving painting, which makes finding it in St. Johnsbury all the more impressive.

The painting looks out across Yosemite Valley, with dramatic cliffs and light that draws your eye into the distance. Give yourself a minute to take it in from farther back, then look more closely at the details. A picture on your phone won’t give you much sense of its scale.

And despite the name, this isn’t a painting on the ceiling or inside a dome. The “domes” are the rock formations in Yosemite. The canvas fills the gallery’s far wall, in a space whose design was influenced by the painting itself. Horace Fairbanks acquired it before the gallery opened in 1873, so this room and its most recognizable artwork have a long history together.

## A Gift to St. Johnsbury

The Athenaeum opened in 1871 as a gift from Horace Fairbanks to the people of St. Johnsbury. Fairbanks was part of the family behind the town’s successful scale-manufacturing business and had also served as Vermont’s governor.

Designed by architect John Davis Hatch III, the building’s French Second Empire architecture includes a mansard roof and tall arched windows. Inside, the elaborate woodwork and spiral staircases make even a quick look around feel like an outing. The building became a National Historic Landmark in 1996.

I love that a place this beautiful is still part of everyday life here. People come in to borrow books and use their local library, while visitors like me are trying to take in every architectural detail without getting in anyone’s way.

## A Gallery That Still Feels Like the 1800s

Fairbanks added the art gallery in 1873, two years after the library opened. It initially held about fifty paintings and a few marble sculptures; gifts from the family eventually brought the collection to more than one hundred works.

American landscape painting is a major part of the collection, with Hudson River School artists including Asher B. Durand and Jasper Cropsey represented alongside European works and copies of classical paintings.

The room itself is part of the experience. Paintings hang above one another in heavy gilded frames, with sculptures on pedestals and natural light coming through the skylight. The Athenaeum intentionally preserves that historic arrangement, so you get a sense of how visitors would have encountered the collection generations ago.

Start with the Bierstadt, but don’t let it take up your entire visit. There’s a lot to look at in a relatively small space, and the smaller paintings deserve some attention, too.
