# The Old Stagecoach Inn in Waterbury, Vermont: A Breakfast Worth Waking Up For

By [Erin McCormick](https://travelikealocalvt.com/author/travelikealocalvt/) · Published October 20, 2026

There’s something about staying in a historic Vermont inn that makes a getaway feel a little more personal. The creaky floorboards, beautiful architectural details, cozy sitting rooms and conversations with fellow travelers are all part of the experience. And in downtown Waterbury, there’s a nearly 200-year-old inn that has been welcoming guests for generations.

**[The Old Stagecoach Inn](https://oldstagecoach.com/?utm_source=travelikealocalvt&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=old-stagecoach-inn-waterbury-vermont) in [Waterbury](https://travelikealocalvt.com/category/destinations/waterbury/), Vermont**, combines historic charm with warm hospitality, an exceptional breakfast and one of the coziest little pubs in town. Located right on Main Street, it’s also an ideal home base for exploring Waterbury, Stowe and the surrounding Green Mountains.

## Nearly 200 Years of Vermont History

Built in 1826, the Old Stagecoach Inn has a fascinating history that reflects the evolution of Waterbury itself.

Originally constructed in the Federal style as a private residence, the building soon became a stagecoach inn and tavern, welcoming travelers passing through town. As rail travel became increasingly popular, Waterbury developed into a stopping point for visitors heading to Vermont’s mountain resorts.

In the late 1800s, the property underwent architectural changes that gave it the Queen Anne Victorian appearance we recognize today, including its distinctive porches and decorative details.

Over the years, the building served as a private residence, boarding house and lodging property before undergoing an extensive restoration in the 1980s. It eventually reopened as a traditional Vermont bed and breakfast, preserving much of its historic character.

Today, owner and innkeeper Christa Bowdish continues the property’s long tradition of hospitality while introducing thoughtful updates that celebrate its history.

## Historic Rooms With Plenty of Character

The Old Stagecoach Inn has just 12 guest rooms, each with its own layout, furnishings and personality.

Some feature traditional Victorian-inspired details, while others offer more contemporary conveniences, including kitchenettes and additional living space. Several rooms are especially well suited for couples, while others can accommodate families or small groups.

What I appreciate about smaller Vermont inns is that the experience feels different from staying at a conventional hotel. You’re surrounded by history, and the common spaces become part of your stay.

At the Old Stagecoach Inn, guests can relax in the parlor beside the fireplace, browse books, play board games or settle into a comfortable chair after a day of exploring.

## A Vermont Breakfast Worth Getting Out of Bed For

One of the biggest reasons to stay at the Old Stagecoach Inn is the breakfast.

And this isn’t your typical hotel continental breakfast.

Each morning begins with a generous spread of homemade pastries, fresh fruit, yogurt, oats and locally roasted coffee, followed by a rotating selection of hot breakfast dishes featuring seasonal and locally sourced ingredients.

Breakfast is included with overnight stays, but here’s something worth knowing: **you don’t have to be a guest to enjoy it!**

The inn opens its breakfast service to the public, making it a wonderful option for locals and visitors looking for a leisurely morning meal in downtown Waterbury.

During warmer months, you can even enjoy breakfast outside on the patio.

## Don’t Miss the Cozy Library Pub

Another reason I love the concept of the Old Stagecoach Inn is its **Library Pub**, a small, intimate bar that feels like a gathering place from another era.

With warm woodwork, bookshelves, historic details and a collection of board games, it’s an inviting spot to settle in for a drink.

The bar features Vermont and regional craft beers, ciders, spirits, wine and cocktails, along with cheese, charcuterie and other light bites.

You can play chess, strike up a conversation with another guest or simply enjoy a nightcap before heading upstairs.

And like breakfast, the Library Pub is open to the public, so you don’t need to stay overnight to enjoy it.

## Walk to Waterbury’s Restaurants, [Breweries](https://travelikealocalvt.com/category/vermont-experiences/breweries/) and Shops

Location is another major advantage of staying at the Old Stagecoach Inn.

Situated in Waterbury’s historic village center, the inn is within walking distance of restaurants, independent shops, coffee spots and craft breweries.

Waterbury has developed an impressive food and drink scene, making it a particularly appealing destination for travelers who plan their getaways around great meals and local beer.

And beyond downtown, you’re just a short drive from some of central Vermont’s most popular attractions, including Cold Hollow Cider Mill, Ben & Jerry’s Factory, Stowe and the Mad River Valley.

Whether you’re visiting for fall foliage, a winter ski weekend or a summer adventure, Waterbury makes a convenient base for exploring several different parts of Vermont without having to change accommodations.

## Why Stay at the Old Stagecoach Inn?

I love seeing historic Vermont buildings preserved and given new life, particularly when they continue serving the communities around them.

The Old Stagecoach Inn is a wonderful example. Nearly two centuries after it first welcomed travelers, it remains a gathering place where guests can enjoy good food, thoughtful hospitality and a little Vermont history.

It’s an especially appealing choice for couples looking for a romantic getaway, travelers who appreciate historic architecture and anyone who prefers the personality of an independently owned inn over a traditional hotel.

And even if you’re not planning an overnight stay, I’d recommend keeping the inn in mind for breakfast or a cozy evening drink at the Library Pub.
