# Grafton’s Christmas Dog Parade Is Peak Small-Town Vermont

By [Erin McCormick](https://travelikealocalvt.com/author/travelikealocalvt/) · Published November 7, 2026

Give me a historic Vermont village dressed for Christmas, then add a parade of dogs in holiday outfits, and I’m going to have a hard time finding a reason to stay home.

That’s the appeal of the Christmas dog parade in Grafton, Vermont, part of the annual Grafton Village Holiday Festival. This [Southern Vermont](https://travelikealocalvt.com/category/destinations/southern-vermont/) town already looks ready for a Hallmark Christmas movie before anyone hangs a wreath. Add a community celebration and dogs getting their moment in the spotlight, and you have a very good excuse to spend a December Saturday here.

My advice? Come for the dogs, but leave yourself time to enjoy Grafton. This is a place to wander slowly, shop locally and let your phone become considerably less important for a few hours.

## When Is the Grafton Christmas Dog Parade?

The 2026 Grafton Village Holiday Festival is scheduled for Saturday, December 5, and the Dogs of Grafton parade is included in the celebration. Organizers have also confirmed holiday shopping, traditional Christmas activities and a visit from Santa.

The exact 2026 parade start time and lineup instructions have not yet been posted on the festival’s announcement page. Check the [official Grafton Village Holiday Festival listing](https://www.visitgraftonvt.com/events/grafton-village-holiday-festival-2026/?utm_source=travelikealocalvt&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=grafton-christmas-dog-parade) before heading out, particularly if you want your dog to participate.

For reference, the 2025 parade was scheduled for 11:15 a.m., with participants meeting at Grafton Elementary School at 58 School Street. Those are last year’s details, so don’t put that time into your calendar for 2026 just yet.

I’d plan to spend several hours in the village rather than arrive just before the parade and leave immediately afterward. A relaxed late morning and afternoon gives you time to enjoy the celebration without making the whole day revolve around finding a parking spot at the last minute.

## A Vermont Town That Looks Ready for a Hallmark Christmas Movie

Some towns need a lot of decorating to look festive. Grafton has a head start.

Its historic village, with white clapboard buildings and an old-fashioned inn, lends itself beautifully to Christmas. It’s easy to picture the movie plot: someone arrives from the city, loses cell service and discovers that the most pressing item on the day’s agenda is watching a dog parade.

I’d watch that movie. I’d also happily spend the afternoon there.

What appeals to me about a celebration like this is the scale. You’re visiting a real Vermont community, with local institutions and businesses participating in a holiday tradition. The village itself is part of the experience, so give yourself permission to wander between activities instead of trying to fill every minute.

And while snow would certainly complete the picture, early December doesn’t come with a guarantee. Grafton doesn’t need a fresh snowfall to make a convincing Christmas town.

## Why the Dogs Are the Main Attraction

A dog parade is a wonderfully uncomplicated reason to gather.

The parade encourages townseople and visitors to bring their pups dressed in their holiday best. That alone should give you a sense of the atmosphere: festive, cheerful and probably much more entertaining than anything you were planning to accomplish at home that morning.

As a dog person, I love an event that gives the dogs the main focus. There’s something about watching people proudly accompany their dressed-up companions through a village that makes it difficult to take the holiday season too seriously.

You don’t need to bring a dog to enjoy it, either. Watching from the sidelines is reason enough to go, especially if you’re looking for a seasonal outing with children or a Christmas day trip with a friend.

If you do bring your pup, think about how comfortable they are around other dogs and crowds. Pack a leash and waste bags, bring water, and choose any festive outfit with their comfort in mind. A holiday bandana is perfectly respectable formalwear.

## Make Time for the Rest of the Holiday Festival

The dog parade is part of a larger village celebration, so check the full schedule when it becomes available.

Previous festivals have included gingerbread displays, holiday treats and opportunities to visit local organizations. The Grafton Historical Society also describes its annual festival participation as a chance to stop into the museum for refreshments and a seasonal pop-up display.

## About That Cell Service

Plan for little or no reliable cell service during your visit, rather than assuming your phone will work everywhere. Coverage varies by carrier and location, and regional planning information identifies parts of Grafton among the areas with the weakest cellular coverage.

Download your directions before leaving home and screenshot the festival schedule. If you’re meeting friends, choose a specific meeting spot and time in advance.

There’s a practical side to that advice, but I also think being harder to reach suits a day in Grafton. Take your photos, then put the phone in your pocket and enjoy what’s happening in front of you.

Limited cell service doesn’t mean there’s no internet anywhere. The Grafton Inn, for example, offers Wi-Fi throughout its property for guests.

## Stay Overnight or Plan a Meal in the Village

If you want to turn the parade into a Christmas weekend away, look into the [Grafton Inn](https://www.graftoninnvermont.com/?utm_source=travelikealocalvt&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=grafton-christmas-dog-parade). Staying in the village gives you time to settle in instead of watching the clock for the drive home.

The inn’s Phelps Barn Pub offers a casual dining option, and reservations are recommended. Check current hours and availability before building your day around a meal, especially on a festival weekend.

Traveling with your dog takes a little extra planning. Confirm pet-friendly lodging directly, and remember that an outdoor dog parade doesn’t mean every shop or dining room allows pets inside.

## What to Know Before You Go

- Date: Saturday, December 5, 2026.
- Location: Grafton village in Southern Vermont; check the final schedule for parade assembly and viewing details.
- Timing and cost: The parade’s exact start time, participation requirements and any fees are not specified in the current announcement.
- Parking: Follow posted event directions and leave driveways clear. Don’t assume a business’s customer parking is festival parking.
- What to wear: Warm layers and boots suitable for wet or slippery ground. Standing outside gets cold faster than walking.
- Accessibility: Confirm the route, accessible parking and indoor access with organizers if you have mobility needs.

I’d save the date now and check the schedule again closer to December. There are plenty of ways to celebrate Christmas in Vermont, but spending an afternoon in Grafton while dogs parade through town in their holiday best sounds particularly hard to improve upon.
