# Browns River Covered Bridge: A Vermont Stop in Westford

By [Erin McCormick](https://travelikealocalvt.com/author/travelikealocalvt/) · Published October 30, 2026

A covered bridge is usually enough to persuade me to take a detour. The Browns River Covered Bridge in Westford, Vermont, is a good reason to slow down and look around, especially if you’re already exploring the area.

## Why Visit the Browns River Covered Bridge?

For me, the appeal of a [covered bridge](https://travelikealocalvt.com/category/vermont-experiences/covered-bridges/) is in the details. Look at the wooden framework and the way daylight comes through the openings, then give yourself a minute to enjoy the river setting.

These crossings are such familiar Vermont landmarks that it’s easy to forget how practical their design was. The roof and siding helped protect the wooden structure from the weather. What makes a good photo today originally served a very useful purpose.

I like making room for small stops like this when I’m driving around Vermont. You don’t need a full afternoon or an elaborate plan. Sometimes getting out of the car and spending a few minutes looking closely is enough to make a drive more interesting.

## A Stop to Include in a Westford Outing

I’d work the bridge into a drive through Westford rather than treat it as a long activity on its own. Leave yourself time to look around the village and follow whatever catches your attention along the way.

If you’re photographing the bridge, take a moment to consider a few different views instead of heading straight for the entrance. The relationship between the bridge and the river is part of what makes these places interesting.

Follow any posted access signs, respect neighboring properties and find a legal place to park before setting out on foot.

And if you’re up for a little more exploring, add a few nearby covered bridges to your route. It’s an easy excuse to take the back roads and make an afternoon of it.

- Maple Street Covered Bridge in Fairfax, also known as the Fairfax Covered Bridge.
- Grist Mill Covered Bridge near Jeffersonville, also called the Scott or Canyon Covered Bridge.
- Poland Covered Bridge in Cambridge, also known as the Cambridge Junction Covered Bridge.
